Until the construction of the Katharine Chapel, the third highest mountain in the Kaiserstuhl was called Hankrot; it was only later renamed Katharinenberg. The steps of the church stand exactly at the point where the boundaries of the three municipalities of Endingen, Schelingen, and Amoltern meet. Numerous paths lead to this pilgrimage destination, and services are held several times a year. If the chapel is open, it is worth climbing the church tower, where we can enjoy a beautiful view. The ascent from the historic old town of Endingen takes place above the picturesque Erletal. At the end of the tour, one can visit the bathing pond or play a round of mini-golf.
At the train station in Endingen, we orient ourselves south and hike past the cheese museum to the market square in the historic old town. Passing the Martins Church, we reach the shooter’s club and turn halfway right past the Marien Chapel to the nearby signpost "Im Teninger Acker," where the return path later merges. We hike the tour clockwise and head slightly left through a hollow alley up into the vineyards. While beautiful views over Endingen open up behind us, the Katharine Chapel can already be seen high above. Mostly gently ascending, we hike towards our destination through the terraced landscape, reach the forest edge, and shortly after, a small asphalt road. Here we turn left to the Schindhalde signpost, from where you can shortcut directly to Katharinenberg. However, we first go some altitude meters downhill on the left-hand side.
