From the lagoon beach along the E4 on the south coast

The lagoon of Elafonisi, framed by a pink shimmering strip of sand, is one of Crete's most famous bathing spots. Despite its remote location in the far southwest of the island and without a larger town nearby, it is always very busy here during the summer months. Try to come as early as possible; by noon the huge parking lots are usually full. On the tranquil coastal hike, you quickly leave the colorful hustle and bustle behind. Before or after the hike, make sure to wade through the water, which is at most a meter deep, to the shallow offshore islet of Elafonisi.

At Elafonisi beach, we turn west; after a few minutes, a sign and trail markers signal the start of the E4 long-distance trail. On an initially sandy path, we hike 30 to 40 m parallel to the coast through a "rock garden," where randomly scattered stones must be circumvented and small boulders climbed over. After about 20 minutes, a gate in a fence is passed a few steps before the water. Shortly after a small bay, the path leads through the cedar-juniper forest of Kedrodasos. In this sparse woodland with sometimes gnarled juniper trees, it is not always easy to find the marked "ideal line," but the sandy path never strays far from the sea. After a second small bay, the long sandy beach of Kedrodasos Beach is reached. It may not quite match Elafonisi, but here you are already far from the crowds. The cedar forest is now behind us. A few minutes after another small bathing beach, the path turns inland. We ascend about 150 m through a rocky creek valley, sometimes needing to use our hands.

Profile picture of Rolf Goetz Author Rolf Goetz
