This mid- to high-mountain tour takes us over meadows, plateaus, and rugged rock up to the highest peak of the Somiedo municipality. The starting point of the tour is Puerto de Somiedo (also Santa María del Puerto, or El Puerto or El Puertu), a location situated at nearly 1500 m, where some of the last Vaqueiros de Alzada still live today, engaging in a nomadic lifestyle dedicated to traditional livestock farming. Over the centuries, they have developed into an ethnic minority with their own culture, customs, and language.
From the hiking information board about the route in Puerto de Somiedo, we enter the village (yellow-white markings), keep left at the first fork, and follow the road until after a total of 200 m we reach a three-way fork at the edge of the village. Here we leave the village to the right on the driveway. At the next fork, we go left, cross a stream on a bridge, pass through a cattle gate, and then take the right path at the next fork. Now we always stay on the marked path running alongside a wall until we cross an irrigation canal. We follow this on its left side and then continue on a path to the left of the next wall. About 100 m after the end of the wall, we ascend diagonally right (northwest). Then the path turns north and shortly after curves left (northwest) into the hillside notch. After about 50 m, we ascend again to the right (north). At the fork, we keep left, walk 20 m across the meadow, then take the right path to reach a saddle. On the other side, our hiking trail descends
