Conglomerate and sandstone created an impressive natural spectacle near Isny. Waterfalls have been raging through the Eistobel since ancient times. They gave the rocks bizarre shapes and cause strange ice formations in winter. The name Eistobel comes from the icicles that form on the rocks. In winter, crampons are often needed on shoes and the route is then only recommended for experienced hikers. The majority of the gorge has been a nature reserve since September 1970, covering about 70 hectares. After the glaciers of the last Ice Age had melted, a huge moraine deposit remained in the Alpine foothills. The meltwater collected in large lakes. One such lake also formed in the basin of Ebratshofen. When the meltwater first reached high levels in the east at Bischlecht and then in the west at Harbatshofen, the water masses carved out a drainage channel to the south.
