An individualist among the Tannheim mountains

The name Einstein says a lot about what makes this mountain so special. The word "Stein" is used to describe prominent and striking rocky peaks, and the "Ein" refers to its completely isolated location. This mountain stands completely alone to the north of the village of Tannheim. Of course, this also makes it a top-class vantage point. Above all, the mountains to the south of the valley are neatly lined up opposite each other; you can study them all from the Wannenjoch to the Geißhorn and the Krinnenspitze. The main peaks of the Tannheimer, on the other hand, are pushed up one behind the other and form a tight group of rather wild horns.
Although the route climbs over a few steeper sections, it does not present any real difficulties. The southern exposure ensures dryness and warmth in summer, but also makes it possible to climb early and quite late in the year. You can also descend from the Ostschulter in varied terrain with beautiful mats to the north into the Achental valley. However, the return to Tannheim by public transport is inconvenient (it is better to take a second car).

From the Tannheim-Berg parking lot, we first hike north to the village of Berg. We walk straight on through the village to the Schäferhütte, 1142 m, where the asphalt road ends. From here, the trail climbs gently over wide pastures and we always enjoy a beautiful view back to Tannheim. We reach the actual foot of the mountain via several clearings, climbing only slightly. On the now much narrower path, we climb up the steep, partly green and partly scree-covered flank via hairpin bends to reach a gap in the main ridge. Our path immediately leads left again into the southern flank. We overcome a scree step and finally climb steeply between mountain pines and over small rock steps to the summit of the Einstein, which is formed by a small plateau that breaks off into steep walls in almost all directions. The way back follows the same route.
