Due to its isolated location, the Einstein – despite its comparatively modest height – is a very prominent summit above the Tannheimer Tal and is therefore often visited. The entire panorama of this valley is excellently spread out in a large semicircle. However, there is also access from the north side, which has its advantages: The route is quieter, usually not as hot in summer, and the surprise effect when you reach the summit ridge is stronger. Unfortunately, a traverse is somewhat logistically complicated.
The signpost at the Achental parking lot guides us across a meadow into the nearby light forest where an earthy path leads uphill. After half an hour, we reach a forest road at just under 1200 meters, follow it a little to the right and then always observe the signs to the Einstein (marked at all junctions). On a clearing, the Einsteinhütte greets us at about 1330 m. Continue over meadows into the terrain gap, later keeping right and on the east flank of our mountain in switchbacks and later diagonally uphill. You reach rocky sections, which are eased with fixed ropes, leading briefly tougher up to the southeast ridge, approx. 1730 m. This now forms the guiding line. Where you move slightly left, the more trodden normal route from Tannheim joins in. Over roots and rocks, one climbs quite steeply to the highest point on the Einstein, 1866 m, but hardly needs to use hands for support. The descent follows the same path.

Mark Zahel
