The Klause, Fort Claudia, as well as the Ehrenberg Fortress Ruins and Schlosskopf Castle

The Ehrenberg castle complex, consisting of four parts, was one of the most important fortress ensembles in Europe and is nowadays naturally one of the special tourist attractions in the Reutte region. The main and central object of the site is the Ehrenberg Castle, initiated by Count Meinhard II from 1290. This is complemented by the Ehrenberger Klause in the valley floor, Fort Claudia on the opposite slope, and the fortress on Schlosskopf, which was only built in the 18th century after the main castle was nearly taken from behind twice (1546 and 1703) and had to be painstakingly reconquered by the Tyroleans each time. The ruin areas including viewing platforms and the exhibition in the casemates can be freely explored, while a fee is charged for the suspension bridge over the Fernpass road ("Highline 179") and the inclined elevator ("Ehrenberg Liner").

From the Ehrenberger Klause, a wide path with a distinctive hairpin leads up to the exhibition in the casemates – an inclined elevator can take us the nearly half-hour climb. Over a frequently used suspension bridge, you cross to the other side of the Fernpass road and shortly climb to Fort Claudia, 1100 m. After this detour, we take a closer look at the Ehrenberg ruin, 1105 m. A viewing platform offers the best perspective. Back at the casemates, a steeper forest trail leads to the higher located Schlosskopf ruin, 1261 m. Two viewing platforms and a network of paths allow extensive exploration here as well. We leave the fortress at the back onto a forest road and after about a kilometer, notice the sharp left turn. The steep descent then leads back to the Ehrenberger Klause.

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
