In this case, "matchstick" does not mean a match, but an extensive forest area on the heights west of the Donaumoos. The municipality of Ehekirchen has marked an interesting circular hiking trail here, which leads once counterclockwise around the matchstick and only briefly dives into the forest twice, but mostly remains varied and scenic outside the forest edge. The landscape presents itself with two faces: while the first, eastern part of the tour is entirely oriented towards the Donaumoos with the places Ehekirchen, Ambach, Fern- and Nähermittenhausen, the view on the second part goes northwest towards the Danube valley and the Franconian Alb rising behind it, and with Bonsal only one more village is touched.
At the town hall in Ehekirchen, a large board informs about the hiking trails. We go opposite into Bürgermeister-Braun-Straße and follow it to the intersection with Kirschgartenstraße, where we leave the town to the right on a paved farm road. It goes northwards - once turning right, then left again - to Ambach, which we pass through, walking left under the St. Martin church on Glockenweg. At the intersection outside the village, we follow the paved farm road continuing straight and soon no longer on asphalt towards the forest belt in front of us, taking the right branch at a fork in the field path. It bends right at the forest edge and runs along the forest. After about 200 m we turn left and steeply descend into a valley; from the valley track it goes slightly left offset uphill in the same direction and then left on the cross path at the top.
