The area around Ering was once the lower reaches of a raging Alpine river. Later, the Inn was dammed and straightened. Nevertheless, despite these radical changes, the Lower Inn remains a natural area of international significance to this day. The expansive bodies of water, mudflats, islands, riparian forests, and meadows form a vital habitat for numerous animal and plant species and, as part of Europe’s natural heritage, are to be preserved for future generations. The European Nature Reserve extends over 55 kilometers of the river on both sides of the border—from the mouth of the Salzach near Marktl to the mouth of the Rott near Schärding.
We start our tour at the parking lot by the Eglsee birdwatching tower. It’s definitely worth visiting the tower first to get a glimpse of the diverse wildlife along the old channel of the Inn River.We then hike a short distance along the quiet side road toward Eglsee. After about 100 m, however, we turn right off the road and follow the Inn embankment along the oxbow lake (→ alternative route at the fish ladder).The actual Inn River, which was dredged and straightened in the early 20th century, is still hidden here behind a narrow strip of trees. We follow the dam to the Ering-Frauenstein hydroelectric power plant. Shortly before the power plant, the gravel path curves left toward the access road to the power plant. On this road, we turn right and hike across the dam to the Austrian side of the Inn, straight to Frauenstein Castle. At the castle, we turn left and continue on a paved side road through the small village of Frauenstein toward Mining. Just before Mining, we leave the side
