Durbach, the Ortenau community of around 4000 inhabitants between Offenburg and Oberkirch, is known beyond the region for its top wines. In addition to tourism, fruit and wine growing are among the pillars of the local economy. If you would like to taste the exquisite Durbach wines in stylish surroundings, you can do so at the Staufenberg Castle winery. Easy hiking trails lead to the romantic castle complex, alternating between orchards, vineyards and forests.
At the fairground in Durbach, 202 m, we head north along the parking lot access road to the thoroughfare (K5369), take a few steps to the right and turn left at the houses in Hilsbach. The small asphalt road leaves the valley floor, climbs in two large hairpin bends into the vineyards and finally gains the ridge on the Hilsbacher Höhe, 275 m, on the right. The wide, gravelled ridge path leads briefly through the forest, then offers great views between forest and vineyards to the Hespengrund cross, before splitting up for a few minutes to climb up to the Hespengrund signpost. The route then becomes easier again, mostly with magnificent views of the castle dominating the landscape to the Illental junction, where the Renchtalsteig joins the route. Together with the popular long-distance hiking trail, we reach Staufenberg Castle, 383 m above sea level, which is privately owned by the House of Baden.
