Historic roadside crosses from a time when the population of Britten lived almost exclusively from "stones" can be found along the path. Two abandoned quarries also testify to the work of the stonemason. In the romantic Saarhölzbachtal, only the babbling of the stream can be heard. Historic boundary stones recall the former border between the Saar region and Germany.
On this path, cultural history and landscape become one.
Between 1743 and 1786, stonemasons from Britten created numerous roadside crosses. Ten historic crosses line the Steinhauerweg. In the shady forest, narrow forest paths are interwoven with wider forest service roads. On soft forest ground, gently downhill, the valley of the Saarhölzbach is reached.
Historic boundary stones of the former border can be found along the path. After World War I, the Saar region was separated from Germany and placed under the administration of the League of Nations. On the ascent from the idyllic Saarhölzbachtal, there is a memorial forest that is crossed on a wide path.
In sunshine, sun rays illuminate the dark red rocks in an abandoned quarry, creating fascinating shadow plays cast by the trees above the quarry. Flowers and grass grow out of cracks and crevices, some rock slabs are covered with thick moss layers, and some rocks have trees growing on them with roots coiled around the stone. At the "Fonkenbruch" quarry, signs of hammer and chisel are still clearly visible on the dark rock walls of the narrow passage. Trees cloak the quarry in mystical darkness. Shortly afterward, wonderful views "At Schönertskopf" over the forests to Losheim and Merzig.
The Steinhauerweg was rated with 87 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.

Attention:
Entering the forest and walking the paths is always at your own risk!
Depending on the season and weather, increased sure-footedness is required on some sections. Please wear clothing and hiking boots appropriate to the season and weather, with suitable tread. Be careful of breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong winds and in winter due to snow and ice, there is a higher risk of falling trees and branches.

Roadbook
We start at the forest festival site and turn left at the information board of the tactile path. Then turn right onto a path through a wetland area along the Seffersbach. We come to a wide path and continue to the right. After a short distance, take a sharp left onto a path through coniferous forest until reaching the historic roadside cross "Dudisch Fra." We cross the street, see the "Pelcer Cross" ahead, and continue right on the gravel path, passing the houses of the village Britten and at the crossroads turning left onto a forest service road. Soon, the nature reserve of the Saarhölzbachtal is reached. Following the narrow, natural path over root-covered ground, always parallel to the stream, many historic boundary stones are encountered here.
At two small ponds, the Saarhölzbach is crossed. The path now continues on a wider path past the chapel of a memorial forest until a left turn. Here the path leads the hiker to two abandoned quarries. Shortly after, you arrive at the "Finkenbruch," an almost circular quarry with steep rock walls. After a short ascent, you can enjoy the view from Schönertskopf. Then continue downhill through a small wooded area. A section with branched ravines follows and leads downhill back to the forest festival site in Britten.
