You leave Boppard station at the back and follow the road parallel to the tracks with a view of the old Säuerling Tower initially to the north. After about 500 meters, there is a signpost to the Hunsrückhöhenweg on the left. Towards Buchholz you go up through a small pedestrian path. After only a few minutes, you leave Boppard behind. It goes in a zigzag on a narrow forest path steeply uphill. You leave the first sign for the Elfenlay on the right and continue on the steep path to the Sabelsköpchen, a large rest hut with a wonderful view of the Rhine loop.
Then it goes gently uphill on the Hunsrück Railway hiking trail, first over field paths and finally again on narrow forest paths. The path crosses the Hunsrück Railway line on the Hunsrückhöhenweg, which shortly afterwards passes under the A 61 motorway. After a short section along the tracks, keep right to move away from the motorway and follow the path down to the L209 country road. There, wooden signs indicate the nearby valleys and paths, all of which lie in the Boppard city forest. After a few kilometers, you reach the Devil's Bridge, which leads via enchanted paths with beautiful views into the Devil's Brook valley to the Himmelsleiter. It leads steeply down into the Thomasbach valley on narrow wooden steps.
Now follow the signs to the Elfenlay path on the right. Slightly uphill, it continues again on pleasant narrow forest paths. Through the Hubertus Gorge it becomes very difficult to pass, and even in summer you should definitely wear long trousers there! A barely recognizable path leads uphill again behind the bridge. At the top you first follow the railway tracks and then find the signposted path again. At Liesenfeld's hut you have a breathtaking view from above into the Hubertus Gorge. On the way back to Boppard, it goes down into the Mühlbach valley again with many beautiful views of the Rhine.
