The circular "Dragon Route" hike for adults and children offers wonderfully beautiful viewpoints, the mysterious Drachenfels castle ruins, and unique rocks.

The circular route with a total length of about 7 km can also be divided into 2 smaller parts, in case children are too young for the entire route. The western part of about 4 km features 2 great viewpoints with the Schüsselfels and Buchkammerfelsen rock formations, impressing with their magnificent views. The eastern part is about 3 km long and passes the St. Gertraud chapel.

A special highlight of the "Dragon Route" is naturally the mighty Drachenfels rock castle, which should definitely be included with an extensive visit on this hike.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature

Always behave cautiously, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the way.

Respect nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths.

Remember a trash bag for on the way and take your waste back home.

Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

Observe all path closures for your own safety, also on weekends.

Only park in designated parking spaces. Leave space for rescue routes and agricultural machinery.

Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

    Safety information

Especially in autumn, be aware that leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may drop. Especially in bad weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in some places. Such path restrictions must be expected when hiking. If you think certain sections are impassable, you should avoid them. Despite the 'unerring' marking of the premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying a corresponding hiking map for safety reasons, so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or emergency.

    NOTE:

We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you encounter closures or detours on site, please observe the instructions for your own safety.

    Roadbook

Part 1: From the parking lot marked "Busenberger Holzschuhpfad" head west first on a forest road then on a hiking trail uphill to the Heidenberg to Schlüsselfels (viewpoint). Continue with the same marking on a hiking trail over the rocky mountain ridge to the west side of the Heidenberg with the mighty Buchkammerfelsen. Here you have a great view of the Drachenfels castle ruins.  Now go down the mountain with the same marking to the Drachenfelshütte (PWV hut, open Wed/Sat/Sun/holidays) and up to the Drachenfels castle ruins.

After visiting the castle, return the same way to the Drachenfelshütte and from there follow the marking „Felsenland Sagenweg“ back to the parking lot, the starting point of the route.

Route description (Part 2): Continue the hike from the parking lot heading east with the marking „Felsenland Sagenweg“ to the "St. Gertraud" chapel and then to the fork where you meet the marking „Pfälzer Jakobswege/Connecting route“ (shell and letters VR). Turn here and follow the hiking trail with the marking „Shell/VR“ uphill to the parking lot, the starting point of the route.

Legends along the route: „The golden crown“, „The fate of the confidant“, „Protection against lightning and thunderstorms“.
Descriptions of the legends can be found in the brochure "Legends, Myths and Stories along the Felsenland Sagenweg". It is available at the Dahner Felsenland Tourist Information for a fee of 3.50 €.
