Beautiful and easy hike from Tomils to Scharans through the Domleschg.
From the post bus stop on the edge of Tomils, we follow the road upwards very briefly. Already after the tight curve we turn right into a natural path and soon reach Dusch with its old houses, passing through rural seclusion. A comfortable path circles a wooded hill. On a tree, a nostalgic signpost points right to the Romanesque Magdalene chapel. It lies in a clearing in a larch grove. The narrow shortcut is quite steep. Therefore, we go back the short beautiful stretch, cross through Dusch, and continue past the stately Hof Buol built in 1664 towards Paspels. Already at the first next house on the right side of the road, we turn left and cross a meadow. The following forest area is also of gentle silence. In a clearing, a pasture well murmurs and a bench awaits.
In Mulegns, the painter and sculptor Robert Indermaur lived and worked. Some of his works are displayed outdoors. They please us with their restrained, not always entirely harmless humor. Indermaur is, for example, the creator of the unforgettable group of figures at Thusis station, a large painting at the Chur cantonal school, and many, many other works. A wide path now descends through meadowland towards Almens. The whole upper Domleschg lies at our feet. The Piz Beverin unfolds its beauty. Strengthened by a snack at the Landhus restaurant in Almens, we walk through the romantic hedge path to Scharans.
Another catering tip on the route Tomils - Dusch - Sontga Magdalena - Mulegns - Almens – Scharans is the restaurant of the Scalottas Foundation. This is open 365 days a year from 08:00 – 17:00 with a view of the Piz Beverin and the Heinzenberg.

Tips and suggestions
Sontga Magdalena above Dusch: At the last house on the right side of the road in Dusch, we obtained the large, forged key to the Sontga Magdalena chapel. The Romanesque church lies on a circular hill most likely artificially constructed already in prehistoric times – probably at the site of a pre-Christian sanctuary. The chapel has all the components typical for a church of this early period: an apse, an elongated, rectangular hall, and a bell tower – although the latter was added later. Everything is small and charming. The church has no artificial lighting. The three small windows let in only a little light. Therefore, it is recommended to leave the door open. In former times, a Roman – thus pre-Christian – gravestone served as the altar table. A cast of it hangs on one of the church walls.
The very special feature of this church is the wall paintings by the Waltensburg master. They date from around 1350. Although they appear childlike and naive at first, their symbolism is profound. We see Mary Magdalene drying Jesus’ feet with her own hair. And we mentally accompany her to France, where she preaches Christian love to a princely couple over the castle walls. We see the saint being fed by angels in secluded solitude and finally receiving the last sacraments.
When we step outside again, it is worth looking at the roof eaves carved from raw wooden poles, held up by forked branches. Then our gaze falls over the Domleschg, and we see the spot above Sils where mysterious stone engravings in the Carschenna forest tell of a completely different piety of Bronze Age people.
