Dobratsch Alpine Garden
Author’s recommendation
Those who are not afraid of heights dare to go on the skywalk and enjoy a breathtaking view. The skywalk is a metal platform over 7 m long, from which you have a magnificent view of the Rote Wand and can observe rare bird species.
From mid-August to early September, around 7,000 birds of prey fly over the Dobratsch towards the south. Passive gliders like the European honey buzzard, as well as falcons, short-toed snake eagles, and imperial eagles use the thermals and soar over the skywalk.
To see the full range of alpine flowers in bloom in the Villach alpine garden, you would have to come in June for the early bloomers, from late June to July for the main bloom, and in August for the tall herb bloom with many late bloomers.

Roadbook
The start of this moderate hike is at the Waldsiedlung sports field in Arnoldstein. It goes over the Nepomuk Bridge to the alpine farm and further to the Othmar Hut at 643 m. The path leads us through the Schütter Forest, which in places has an untouched primeval forest character.
With its bizarre rock formations and block fields, dwarf pine thickets, black and red pine forests as well as deciduous forests, the Schütt today forms a unique refuge for a variety of animal and plant species. Over the Kranzwand and the Wabenriegel at 1,443 m, it goes only a little further west.
Then we already reach our destination: the alpine garden and the skywalk. The hike back follows the ascent route or is conveniently possible by the nature park bus.
