The South Downs in condensed form

This hike is not too long but offers a good dose of the characteristic South Downs feeling. This includes wide views to the north over the adjacent Low Weald as well as to the south towards the sea, graceful dry valleys, and flower-rich slopes. At the westernmost point of the tour, two windmills ("Jack" and "Jill") add additional accents.

From the parking lot, we take the path uphill towards the west, go over the Ditchling Beacon hill, and then turn left at the (poorly readable) "Heathy Brow" marker. We walk the path southwards before it bends right down into a dry valley. We stay in the valley floor, pass through a gate, and continue our way along the fence on the right. Afterwards, we head to a field path that leads uphill slightly to the right. At the Lower Standean farmstead, we meet a cross path and turn right. On the hill, we cross a crossing path straight ahead and continue walking along a meadow path. Behind a gate, the path turns right and then takes a left turn at another gate. At the fork 200 m later, we choose the right path ("bridlepath") and first descend into a small hollow, then gain height again. We cross a cross path before New Barn Farm straight ahead and come upon a junction of wide field paths behind the farm. We take a detour to the left to the two windmills "Jack" and "Jill," which we discover on

Profile picture of Sabine Gilcher Author Sabine Gilcher
