Beautiful coastal hike with impressive insights into the region's millions of years old history
Dinosaur footprints on the Portuguese coast? Sounds like a legend. Like most legends, this one has a kernel of truth: The huge imprints in the rock face near Cabo Espichel really come from sauropods. Of course, they did not walk up the steep coast but in what was then still shallow mud. Over millions of years, sediments and rock layers settled in the footprints and eventually the plates were tectonically pushed up. Weathering along the coast finally exposed the footprints again. The site has been extensively studied by paleontologists and is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful examples of grouped dinosaur footprints in Europe.
