One of the classic circular tours in the Werra Mountain Region

The hike starts in the pretty half-timbered village of Lindewerra (known for the production of walking sticks) and leads through deciduous forest up to the Devil's Pulpit. This is a sandstone block that juts out from the slope and serves as a protruding viewing balcony offering a deep view of the Werra loop. There is also a rustic mountain hut waiting there, whose predecessor was already a destination for hikers at this spot in the late 19th century. The towering Hanstein castle ruin is the northern corner of this tour; it has a remarkable history and was for a long time the seat of not very peaceful knights who, among other things, made life difficult for the citizens of Mühlhausen and prompted them to build fortifications (Tour "Kloster Anrode"). On the way back, another viewpoint is visited before the route returns through an oak forest, which once supplied raw material for tanners, back to the starting point.

From the parking option at Friedensstraße, follow the village street straight into the half-timbered village of Lindewerra, turn right at the "Teufelskanzel" sign into the "Hirtenrasen" and after a few meters find another sign to the Devil's Pulpit half right. A hollow way takes us after about 300 m to a junction where we keep left ("Teufelskanzel"). Ascending, we reach the edge of the forest and let the footpath guide us straight into the forest, where it first – easy to follow – curves right, then left and gains slight elevation. After a flattening, the path climbs more steeply and reaches the height at the Devil's Pulpit hut, where after a few meters the Devil's Pulpit is on our left. From there it goes along the ridge to the north (marked "Ha"). The path soon becomes a wide footpath and then a forest road. We ignore a left turn to Junkerkuppe. After a short while, the forest road merges into a wide forestry road, which we follow to the left with a slight loss of height, ignoring

Profile picture of Sabine Gilcher Author Sabine Gilcher
