The Debela peč ("thick rock") is the easternmost two-thousander of the Julian Alps. It rises from the rocky ridge, which stands about 1100 m above the Krma valley in the west and 700 m above Pokljuka in the east. The Pokljuka forms the northeasternmost part of the Triglav National Park; it is an approximately 400 km² large, heavily forested high plateau, visited by many mountaineers in spring and autumn.
From the turnoff to the Šport Hotel Pokljuka, we walk about 200 m westwards on the asphalt road (No. 906) towards Rudno Polje and then turn right at the signpost "Lipanca–Blejska koča 1.5 h" onto a gravel road. Through forest we hike with little ascent and descent to a large meadow with the huts of Planina Javornik, 1292 m (also called Zajavornik). A few minutes after the alpine pasture we reach a forest crossing where we meet the Slovenian Geological Hiking Trail. The terrain becomes steeper and after a bend we reach the Planina Lipanca surrounded by magnificent larches with the Blejska koča na Lipanci, 1630 m. For the further path to the summit, we orient ourselves by the sign "Debela peč"; at two junctions, we keep right, only at a third junction at about 1850 m we go left. Over a steep path section we reach the ridge. There our later descent path branches off along the connecting ridge to Lipanska vrata.
