The Riffelsee area, accessible by cable car, offers a fine range of tours. For ambitious mountain hikers, high-altitude trails like the Cottbuser are particularly interesting. The exposed slopes of the Pitztal provide a good dose of excitement and naturally require appropriate equipment, meaning solid surefootedness and experience in dealing with rough conditions. The traverse can be tricky in unfavorable conditions, but compared to other alpine tours, it should not be dramatized. The most beautiful rest spot on the route is at the Muttler, a terrain nose 800 meters above the bottom of the Pitztal.
From the mountain station of the Riffelseebahn a few meters downhill to the west and then right onto trail no. 926 to the Cottbuser Höhenweg. Climb diagonally uphill through terrain often strewn with blocks (three secured sections) and pass the junction to Brandkogel on its eastern flank. With a slight loss of altitude continue into the notch of the Alzeleskar, which now begins the most difficult section. At the safety points, go briefly steeply downhill and then back up in a similar manner on the other side of the often wet funnel. Wire ropes and artificial steps help over the slabby passages up to a ledge from which the traverse of the Steinkogel can be continued slightly descending to the promontory at the Muttler. Here the Cottbuser Höhenweg turns markedly to the left into the north flank and crosses partly unstable slopes. The original route up to P. 2452 at Karlesegg was closed for some time due to a landslide but is now passable again. Nevertheless, the detour set up back then

Mark Zahel
