Visit Val d'Aniene
From the Piana dei Fondi di Jenne, in front of the Forestry Refuge, follow the visible trail [682 / 687A] that enters the beech forest. At the fork, turn right and continue along the wooded ridge of Colle della Colubretta which, in some points, offers panoramic views over the Plain. Having reached the long meadow of Campitelli, cross it and re-enter the forest for a short stretch. From here the trail opens up again and, at the fork, turn left onto trail 638 which runs along the ridge of Colle Campitellino towards Vallepietra. The view from here is spectacular. You can see the entire range of the high peaks of the Simbruini, from Monte Autore to Tarino, to Viglio, and the mountain ranges of southern Lazio which blend into the horizon. Below you opens the deep rift of the Simbrivio Valley, with Colle della Tagliata and, below, Vallepietra.
For the return, go back to the fork and take trail 682 turning left. With a series of ups and downs you reach the provincial road. After crossing it, enter the forest where with two short detours you can reach the Pozzo della Creta Rossa and the Pozzo della Neve, a natural deposit used as an ice quarry before refrigerators existed. Finally, at the fork, turn right, continuing on trail 682, to climb back towards the Forestry Refuge and close the loop.
Author’s recommendation
Spring in bloom: between April and June, you can admire a splendid flowering of wild orchids.
Autumn foliage: in October and November, the beech forest lights up with spectacular colors, ranging from golden yellow to deep red. A perfect opportunity for photography and nature lovers!
Beware of sinkholes: along the route you will encounter some sinkholes, karst depressions in the ground. Avoid getting too close to the edge, as the margins can be unstable, especially after rain or snowfalls.

Safety information
In the mountains weather conditions can change very quickly; check the weather reports before the hike.
All the information provided is indicative; moreover, the passability of the routes is strictly linked to environmental changes, often sudden, due to natural phenomena, therefore no responsibility is assumed. Before leaving, inquire about the condition of the trail at the Monti Simbruini Natural Park Management Authority.
Going alone is risky, bring your mobile phone and, in any case, consider that in the mountains some areas may not have signal coverage; it is advisable to always leave information about your itinerary and approximate return time; also bring a whistle to use in case of emergency to send acoustic signals (a short sound, 2/3 seconds long, repeated six times within a minute, to be repeated until a response is received).
Pay attention to the signs and markings along the route.
As in all Natural Parks, here too flowers and botanical essences are protected and should not be picked; photograph them to bring home a memory and allow others to enjoy them as well.
