The cliff coast between Cabo de Trafalgar and the marshland at the mouth of the Río Barbate is one of the most beautiful sections of the southern Spanish Atlantic coast. Both the south-facing sandstone cliffs along with a wide strip of sea and the extensive pine forest behind, through which the hiking trail from Barbate to Los Caños de Meca runs, are protected areas.
Those starting the hike at the pretty Playa de la Hierbabuena next to the fishing harbor must climb a short steep stretch over sand into the pine forest at the end of the beach. The marked hiking trail (SL-A 111) leads slightly uphill on partly sandy, partly rocky ground along the steep slope of the »Monte de la Breña«. 10 minutes after leaving the beach, a path joins from the right: this is the direct access from the Barbate-Caños de Meca road, A-2233. Another 10 minutes later, a viewpoint secured with wooden railings is passed. After about an hour, we reach the highest point of the cliff coast, where the Torre del Tajo, a watchtower from the 16th century, stands. This tower, together with other watchtowers at Cabo de Trafalgar and Cabo de Gracia, as well as the later added Torre de Meca, served to protect against pirate attacks.
