    DESCRIPTION

The road winds uphill through the Gouravour Gorge (a narrow passage between rock faces), past its waterfalls and small pools nestled between two steep cliffs. You cross the Maraize River over an old stone bridge, and at the next bend, an information board explains how this landscape was formed.

A little further on, you’ll pass the Faï farm—a center for welcoming, meeting, and exchanging ideas among international youth—and a horn-shaped instrument that echoes music off the gorge’s walls.

After a few more waterfalls, the road crosses the torrent again, and you’ll take the path on the right, toward “Clausonne,” marked in yellow. This path leads you in just a few steps to the ruins of Clausonne Abbey.
The trail then climbs through the Péguière mountain pastures, and at the very top, near the house, continues along the road that ascends to the right, then crosses the trail and climbs straight ahead through the fields (the markings alternate between wooden posts and stones).

On your left, you’ll have a beautiful view of the entire ridge of the Montagne d’Aujour.

At the far end of the field, the trail winds along the mountainside, then enters the forest before emerging onto marl-covered hillocks (follow the yellow markers and cairns), and descends to the Col de Combe Escure, then back to Le Saix, which you reach by crossing a bridge again below the trail. All that’s left is to head back to the parking lot.

    Author’s recommendation

Stunning scenery (landscapes, alpine pastures, panoramic views) and fascinating discoveries await (geology, cultural heritage: including the Faï musical instrument and the ruins of Clausonne Abbey).

Clausonne Abbey dates back to the late 12th century and belongs to the Order of Chalais (like Boscodon Abbey near Embrun and Lure Abbey in the Diocese of Sisteron).

It remained very poor throughout its history and was burned down by Protestants in 1573. In 1993, part of it was restored. The holy water font and the altar stone are currently in the garden of the church at Le Saix. If you still have some energy left, be sure to take a short stroll around the hamlet.
