There may be more impressive gorges than Anidri's on Crete – but after descending to the sea, a very charming beach landscape and the stop at the country inn Sto Scolio after the ascent make the short circular hike a lasting experience. While the upper part of the gorge is easily walkable, the lower part requires mastering several small climbs, aided by a fixed rope at the key section.
In Anidri, we enter a narrow alley next to the tavern Sto Scolio (»to church and gorge«) and immediately pass the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios (famous White Horse fresco from the 14th century). Below the church, we turn right. The concrete path meets a concrete cross path a few steps after an ancient olive tree; the path leading downhill is followed to the left.At an access road to a house, behind a metal gate, a path begins descending into the gorge, which is lined with planes and juniper trees in the upper section. A path branching off to the right (Krokodilos Trail) is passed; about 5 minutes later, a 100 m path branches left (we will return this way). We keep slightly right and continue through the gorge. Shortly, the path becomes more demanding, repeatedly requiring to bypass or climb over larger boulders in the gorge bed.About 10 minutes after the turn-off, the key section, 75 m long, is reached where a rope is present. Here you have to descend a smooth 3 m long rock groove.
