Roadbook
The hike starts at the western parking lot in Waffenhammer. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to drive closer to the hiking trails. After a short stretch along a paved path, a narrow trail branches off inconspicuously to the right. The path is heavily overgrown with nettles (at least in summer). Therefore, long pants are recommended. Once you reach the forest edge, the path becomes more manageable again and leads moderately steeply up the mountain as a root path. After about 220 meters, the path ends and meets a wide gravel path.
We now follow this path to the left and wind our way up the mountain for the next 700 meters. Inconspicuously, as it is not marked as a hiking trail, a forest road branches off to the left after these 700 meters and continues uphill.
This section is not recommended without a good map, as paths often branch off that we do not take. Basically, it should be said that the path leads uphill until its end and not downhill. At the end of the path, we reach a field. We follow the path to the left. This path is often not used - there are many branches on the ground, making this path quite an adventure.
After leaving the forest, the path becomes very grassy. It is sometimes difficult to recognize it anymore. On the left side, a field begins - if necessary, walk along the edge of the field. You will then immediately reach the next hiking trail. This one is wide and well-developed again. The hike now continues downhill to the left of the mountain. A small detour to the right is worth it; there is a nice small bench with a great view.
As mentioned, the hike now goes downhill again. Upon entering the forest, a path branches left which we do not take; we continue straight ahead. After reaching a small wooden hut, the wide forest road becomes a small path that now descends the mountain somewhat steeply - first over fields, later through the forest again. At the edge of the field, there seems to be a fir tree nursery.
After about 600 meters, shortly before reaching the village "Neumühle", a path branches off to the left. This path now runs parallel to the lower Steinach, a small river. There is hardly any elevation gain here. After about 740 meters, we reach the Steinachklamm. Unfortunately, it is much smaller than expected but is still a nice place to rest and relax.
After crossing the lower Steinach via a wooden bridge, we return to the wide path through Waffenhammer. Here we turn left and walk back to the car. A look to the left and right is definitely worthwhile here – great views of the mountains and nice rock formations.
Public transport
The hike is not accessible by public transport!Directions
- From Stadtsteinach, drive north along the lower Steinach on Hammergrundstraße. After 6 km along this road, you will reach Waffenhammer.
- Coming from Presseck, follow Wildensteiner Straße south. In 4.5 km, you reach Wildenstein. From here, it is just a short distance to Waffenhammer.
- Via small roads, including roads that must be driven at your own risk, you can reach Wildenstein within 4 km.
With larger vehicles, you will generally have trouble reaching Waffenhammer. The village is very remote.
Parking
Parking is only possible outside the gates of Waffenhammer, as the village is not accessible by car, motorcycles, etc. However, it is not far to the hiking trails. The parking lot is relatively small but apparently not very busy. It is free of charge.Coordinates
