Northwest of Georgioupoli, the Drapanos peninsula stretches far into the Cretan Sea. It is a region of contrasts with steep cliffs dropping sharply into the sea and cultivated land covered with olive groves. A scenic circular route leads through villages affected by rural depopulation, and in one of them, a visit to the Library Tavern is worthwhile.
In Georgioupoli, we first enjoy the view from the bridge over the boats bobbing in the Almiros River and the White Mountains rising in the distance. We head towards Vamos over the bridge and immediately after the bridge turn sharply right down towards the river. Passing fishing and excursion boats, we reach Kalivaki beach.After two beach taverns, a pedestrian bridge takes us over a river arm, from where a rough path begins on the left, initially following the river inland. After about 10 minutes, the path leads through a small gorge shaded by holm oaks. A few minutes after a lime kiln, we climb up the left side of the gorge and then somewhat steeply up a karstified slope.At a house, we meet a concrete path that continues uphill to a small hill. About 50 m after the hill, we turn right. We ascend a few steps and immediately enter the hamlet of Argyromouri, 120 m, to a two-storey house. There, we go through a gate.
