A jutting cape featuring the 529-meter-high Drapanokefala gives this peninsula, located east of Chania, its distinctive character. Beyond the highway, quiet villages invite you to explore their hidden charms. The loop trail begins at the village square in the charming village of Gavalochori. From there, you reach the neighboring village of Douliana, where a kafenion invites you to take a short break. Along the way, you’ll pass two small chapels nestled against the rocks.
In the small village square in Gavalochori, a large monument is dedicated to the villagers who fell in uprisings and wars. Diagonally across from it, as we head toward Vamos, we turn right off the road at a kafenion into an alley. After passing a tavern, we come to the Folklore Museum and then to the Ekklisia Agiou Sergiou kai Vakchou (Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus), which is quite large for such a small village.The road curves to the left 100 m past the church, where we leave it and continue straight ahead onto an ascending path that is paved at the beginning. Through olive groves, there are beautiful views of the White Mountains and, to the south, of the striking ridge of Drapanokefala, which gave the peninsula its name.After a path branches off to the right, the trail descends somewhat more steeply.
