No hike can provide a better overview of the island of Faial than this one. From a dreamlike viewpoint at the edge of the giant crater, we ascend to the highest peak of the island. Our view extends down to the small coastal communities, and the neighboring islands Pico, São Jorge, and Graciosa can also be seen – unfortunately only in good weather.
Starting point is the turning area at the upper edge of the Caldeira. From here, we initially walk a few steps through a short tunnel to a magnificent viewpoint. Our hiking path begins at the information board. Here, a short staircase ascends to the ridge, along which a footpath continues leftwards past hydrangea hedges towards Cabeço Gordo with its antenna forest. After the first altitude checkpoint at Canto dos Saquinhos, the ascent becomes very steep and worn for a few minutes. At the height of old concrete posts, the path turns right halfway below Cabeço Gordo. Where the paths divide, we keep right, then right again and follow the clearest path along the upper, inner edge of the Caldeira just below the crater rim parallel to the summit road.
