Loop hike between ancient mid-mountain villages, on the sunny side, among chestnut and beech woods, once cultivated and pasture lands.
Starting from the beautiful church of Chialamberto, climb the mountain on the historic trails that allowed upper villages to communicate with the valley floor. You pass through splendid chestnut woods below and beech woods above. Unfortunately, exceptional rain has taken away a characteristic vaulted stone bridge that crossed the Rio Vassola just before Pianardi.
Continuing the ascent, you reach, through an impressive staircase with stone steps, the hamlet of Frassa where the Sanctuary of Madonna della Bassa is located and from which there is a nice view.
You then walk a part of the balcony trail of the Val Grande, while descending you pass next to the climbing cliffs of Biollè, formed of a light gneiss. The return to the starting point follows the Stura stream along the Nature Trail of Val Grande.

Roadbook
Start to the left of the Church following the signs indicating Vonzo / Chiappili (trail number 325). Near a pillar take the left fork (325) to Candiela. Climb a beautiful stepped mule track passing through a chestnut grove with dry stone walls. Cross the asphalt road for the first time; at the second crossing turn left and at the hairpin enter the hamlet: stay just above the wall on the grass to enter among the houses and follow the signs. Having reached the road again at the first hairpin on the left, resume the trail. Reach Case Costa and Candiela (keeping them on the right).
At the last houses turn left on level ground. Shortly after, at a fork, follow signs for Pianardi and then ignoring the signs for the climbing gym descend on the left to cross the Rio Vassola (where until June 2024 there was a beautiful stone bridge). Continue and reach the asphalt road that leads to Pianardi: turn right reaching the hamlet. Without entering the inhabited area follow signs for Frassa, pass near a white chapel, and continue on the road. After a small hairpin, the trail begins on the left with signs for Frassa. The trail climbs in the woods, skirts a stream and then crosses it, continuing to climb up to a white pillar under the rock. Follow the signs that go straight to Frassa.
From Frassa the trail restarts among the houses, climbs slightly and then makes a long traverse towards the west. Upon reaching Biollè, continue on the mid-slope trail which then descends to reach the Unghiasse stream: before the watercourse turn left downhill. At the next junction follow signs for Mottera. Near the Giachin huts continue descending straight. Having crossed a dirt road, pass it and follow the white-red marks on the trees until you reach the provincial road. Then cross the Stura stream and turn left on the Nature Trail which will then be asphalted until reaching Chialamberto.
