The chestnut tree was brought to the Palatinate along with the vine by the Romans. The Palatinate people call it "Keschde" and appreciate its value. The fruit, which is collected in the colorful forests in autumn, tastes in many variations. The wood is also used extensively due to its elasticity and weather resistance. Wine barrels were and still are made from chestnut wood. Already with the Romans, each legionnaire received a ration of chestnuts as a bread substitute. The Palatinate people also used the chestnuts as a substitute for potatoes or bread in all centuries in the forest.
