The first part of the tour takes us mostly through the woods. We also cover most of the ascent comfortably in the shade.

From the parking lot/bus stop at Col du Mollendruz, we follow the road for a short distance. After passing the first house, we turn into the woods and follow the hiking trail. After 1.5 km, we leave the trail and turn right onto the forest path. When we reach the paved road, we make a sharp right turn. A few meters later, we leave the paved road again and follow the dirt road. We follow this until km 3.4, then turn onto the trail. Now the climb begins—gently at first, then getting steeper.

After 600 m, we reach another forest path, which we follow. At one point, the surface changes to asphalt. After 5.7 km, we leave the road and follow the path uphill. Now we really start to work up a sweat. At km 7.1, the road narrows to a trail, and after 500 m we reach the hiking trail, which we now follow. After leaving the forest, we catch our first glimpse of the summit of Châtel, our destination for the day, which we reach after 9 km. After 300 m, the Buvette de Châtel invites us to stop for a break. Here we can refuel. As we continue, the path becomes very steep and is full of roots—please watch your step so you don’t trip! For the last 2 km, we follow the Jura High Trail.

Don't forget to pack a snack in your backpack. The snack bar won't be along until the last third of the hike.
