Northernmost cornerstone of the Dévoluy

The Châtel rises like a table mountain above the pretty town of Mens. From the north, it looks like a ship stretching its rock-banded bow into the sea of the sky. This striking reef in the northern foothills of the Obiou is literally crying out to be climbed. Weary from the heat of the land, it is worth climbing the shady western slope in the morning. If you start very early, you can marvel at the Vercors crete, which can be seen in its entire length and shines supernaturally beautiful in the first sunlight. In cooler temperatures, the tour is recommended in the late afternoon, when the imposing Obiou is in its best light.

From the Baret parking lot, yellow markings lead to the foot of the Châtel on a forest path that shortens a forest track. Climb up to a rocky ledge, which you follow to the right until you reach the steep rocky steps on the left, which lead to the mountain's sweeping grassy ridge. A path on the left leads in 10 minutes to the northern edge of the precipice with a large orientation board, on the right in 15 minutes to the highest point of the Châtel, 1937 m. From there, continue south, initially at a leisurely pace, then steeply downhill to the crossroads above the Col de la Brèche, 1773 m. The route crosses to the right through the southern flanks, zigzags through the forest and returns north along a forest track to the Baret parking lot.
