Chapel loop - mining, streams & trade routes
Encounter special places in the Pleiser hilly landscape
The third chapels loop leads through bright forests, stream valleys, and over the scenic slopes of Hühnerberg, where basalt is still mined today.
Mountain formation, volcanism, and erosion shaped the landscape in the region; numerous mineral deposits were created. So we always have the Hühnerberg as an active basalt quarry in view. While the Hühnerberg was once 362 meters high, it is now 289 meters at the upper edge of the open pit, and the bottom is 90 meters lower. The area has been under nature protection for years, but quarrying is allowed with restrictions and preserves existing conditions. Besides this landscape-defining element, the streams we walk along shape this loop. First the Laubach, which feeds several fish ponds in the valley, then the Pleisbach, which brings us close to Oberpleis, the center of the Pleiser hilly landscape, and later the Logebach, which with the inflow of Quirrenbach becomes the Pleisbach. And when we are on the heights near Berghausen, Quirrenbach, and Brüngsberg, we see the Sieben Berge from a new perspective and the Siebengebirge panorama unfolds for us with completely different views. On the hike we will have seen two of the twelve chapels, the main route of the chapel hike, in Sand and Quirrenbach.

Show elevation profileSafety information
From the parking lot we walk steeply downhill to reach the meadows valley. These elevation meters must be compensated again in Herresbach, so a short and steep uphill. Then moderately to Berghausen, briefly downhill and uphill to Quirrenbach. Then into the valley to Quirrenbach and steeply up to Brüngsberg, downhill into the Logebach valley and uphill to the starting point. Most demanding hike of the three chapels loops.
