The high trail around Fontes, situated at almost 1000 m altitude, is one of the few possible circular tours on Madeira, and it is also exceptionally scenic. Several grassy hilltops shape the highlands, and from the panoramic mountain Chão dos Terreiros there is a magnificent view of the highest peaks of Madeira.
At the village square in Fontes, an asphalt path (Caminho das Fontes) climbs steeply upward to the right of the Bar. At the upper edge of the village, this turns into a cart path lined with chestnut trees. Staying on the main path, after about half an hour a fenced house with a few picnic benches in the front yard is reached. The path sharply turns left here; at the fork about 100 m later, we continue ascending to the right on the main path. After nearly an hour of climbing, a wonderful view into the Ribeira-Brava valley opens up. The path leads gently upward to the east; now we can see the path we've just climbed below us, and soon the Pico Grande comes into view. After a total walking time of about 75 minutes, a fork at 1330 m is reached. After climbing Chão dos Terreiros, we will descend to the right here.
