From the fountain, walk up the small alley, then turn right onto the Roman road and follow it until you reach the first houses.
Note: There’s a trailhead on the Roman road, but I recommend taking the second one, as the climb is easier.
Once you reach the residential area, take the trail on the left to ascend through the woods.
When you leave the woods, you’ll cross a marl landscape covered in shrubbery before reaching the summit of Champérus at an elevation of 1,236 m. The descent is on the southwest side (toward downtown Veynes), along the rock face: a handrail is there to help you on this short, tricky section.
Then follow the ridge and descend along a narrow trail “fit for goats!” Take it slow: the descent is steep.
Further down, you’ll rejoin the Roman road to return to the fountain.
Author’s recommendation
The Roman road, a reminder of the village’s past as a Roman settlement—formerly known as “Davinium”—connected Die in the Drôme region to Gap.From the summit, between Champérus and downtown Veynes—separated by the Glaisette torrent—you can see eroded marl formations along the edge of the Egarets Plateau: a landscape common in the vicinity of Veynes (Val d’Oze, etc.).
