Even from the approach, you can see the impressive ice masses of the Chalaati Glacier from afar, and during the hike, it repeatedly comes into our view. Through enchanting pine forest, sparse birch forest, and finally through rough scree fields, we approach the glacier tongue.
We cross the suspension bridge, 1665 m, bypass the large rock and go right across the meadow into the forest. We orient ourselves by the red-white markings, ignoring the old faded ones. The pine forest thins out after 20 minutes, we hike along the glacier river between birch trees and boulders through the valley, soon the birch forest also thins and in the last 10 minutes we cross scree fields until we reach a large cairn, 1890 m. It is possible to get even closer to the glacier, but one should stay on solid ground and not venture into rocky and ice-fall hazardous terrain. Attention, the ice in the lower glacier area is often dirty and not immediately recognizable as such. We return by the same route.
