From El Chaltén, marked paths initially lead us along the Río de las Vueltas before we cross the river and ascend the slope in a north-westerly direction. We soon leave the last houses of the village behind us and enjoy our first views of the river meanders and the steep cliffs. After crossing a small wooded area, we reach open, stony terrain that leads us to the Mirador Cerro Paredón. Here the mountains spread out before us in their full width: The view extends from the Fitz Roy ice field over Cerro Torre to Cerro Solo. The open slopes are ideal habitats for the Andean condor, which we may be lucky enough to spot in the thermals. The landscape is characterized by glacial rivers, bizarre erosion forms and scree slopes. In late spring and summer, various Patagonia-specific plants bloom. We continue our hike over the ridge of Cerro Paredón and climb over the southern ridge in wide bends back to the starting point.
