With 2.5 km², the Central Cemetery, opened in 1874, is Vienna's largest burial ground. Visiting the honorary graves offers an impressive glimpse into Austria's past. Wide avenues run through the park-like complex. The centerpiece is the Secessionist cemetery church Zum Heiligen Karl Borromäus.
We start our tour at Gate 2. From the main entrance, you reach the honorary graves of famous personalities through the arcades flanked by halls. Architects, sculptors, poets, composers, painters, actors and politicians, including the Austrian Federal Presidents, were buried here on both sides of the avenue between the main entrance and the renovated cemetery church Zum Heiligen Karl Borromäus. In the crypt of the cemetery church rests Vienna's former mayor Dr. Karl Lueger, who gave the church its additional name Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Gedächtniskirche. Behind the church, the avenue continues and ends at the war memorial for Viennese soldiers fallen in World War I. We then turn right and pass countless more or (unfortunately) less well-maintained gravesites to Gate 11. Those who wish can end their visit to Vienna's largest cemetery here and board the S7 at the Zentralfriedhof S-Bahn station. On the way back, we pay a visit to the old Jewish cemetery. Those who wish can then walk straight past
