Author’s recommendation
- Since the hike takes place on Italian territory, carrying an ID is mandatory.
- The Austrian name for the Cellon is Frischenkofel.
- Along the route, there are also handrail ropes as well as areas prone to falls - surefootedness and a head for heights are basic requirements for this mountain hike.

Catering options:
Directly at the Plöcken Pass on the Italian side, as well as near the Plöcken road on the Austrian side (Lamprechtbauer and Untere Valentinalm - seasonal opening hours to be noted) and in Kötschach-Mauthen and the surrounding villages, there are numerous year-round open catering options – details at Service A-Z.
Roadbook
You start directly at the Plöcken Pass at the end of the parking lot (further towards Italy) and from there on the right side you reach the turnoff to the Colinetta. The hiking trail runs along an old military road, past an Alpini barracks, on the right side of the stream. At the first fork, go straight ahead; at the second at about 1,560m, turn right. The path leads over the open areas below the Grünen Schneid, upward in some switchbacks. You reach a crossroads again - here keep left, following the path. Numerous switchbacks follow, and at about 1,980m, turn right (eastwards). You hike straight on until the second junction to finally turn left there. A few minutes later you have reached the summit of the Cellon (Frischenkofel).
Return:
The indicated time includes the time needed for the ascent, but not the descent. The return trip follows the same route as the ascent.
