The Castillo Mayor is an extraordinary sight in every respect. As a mountain, it stands isolated and seems not to belong to any mountain range; its bizarre shape resembles a tilted table mountain that has collapsed inward at the edge. Rarely is the contrast between gentle high pastures and rough karst rock, which can gleam like snow from afar, so impressive.
At the parking lot at Fuente de Sala, we take the path marked by a cairn. It passes a water reservoir, where we continue strongly to ascend keeping right and reach a cross path at 1425 m, which leads up from Puértolas on the right. We proceed left, soon beginning a nicely guided rocky path. After the path levels off, it reaches Prado del Cura, 1523 m, the "Parson's Meadow." We cross the clearing and ascend again through the forest. It quickly clears; only boxwoods and cushions of spiny broom populate the broad south-facing slope, along which our path runs relatively far on the left side of the slope and climbs comfortably, well marked by large cairns, through the karst rock. Cattle paths or shortcuts can quickly deviate from the main path in this section, but they all lead more or less clearly to the small threshold behind which La Plana, 1750 m, extends.
