Those who come to La Franqui immediately notice: this seaside resort is different from most summer resorts on the southern Mediterranean coast of France. Not those kilometer-long concrete blocks on the flat sandy beaches from La Grande-Motte down to the old fishing villages of the Côte Vermeille. Just as the "plan neige" created the new ski resorts in the French Alps, from the mid-1960s the coast of Languedoc–Roussillon was built up with the "plan mer". From then on, the French stayed obediently in their own country during the summer. But in La Franqui, the pine trees are as old as the villas from the Belle Epoque; Paul Gauguin also liked it here. Did he hike and paint the cliffs of Cap Leucate, at whose northern foot La Franqui nestles? By the way, Leucate comes from the Greek "leukos", meaning "white". To sailors, the white cliffs served as a kind of lighthouse. To the farmers of Leucate, they served as a natural boundary of their wind-beaten terrain, which they planted with vines and almond trees. And to us hikers, they serve as a playground for sporty and cultural explorations.
At the end of the road through La Franqui, continue along the coast, first passing through a surprisingly species-rich vegetation with cypresses and rose bushes. After about 30 minutes of walking, the path ends. You descend to the water and follow a trail that leads to a small bay where a few boats often anchor. After rounding Cap des Frères below the 50 m high cliff, stay near the water and move from block to block around Cap Leucate to the bay of La Plagette. Continue over blocks along the shore to the northern tip of Leucate Plage. The climbing over the stone blocks can be avoided in some places by using footpaths that run a little higher on the slope, but between La Franqui and Leucate Plage there is no escape route. From Leucate Plage, take stairs through the villa district up to the Plateau de Leucate and northwards on the path along the cliff edge to the new lighthouse and to Cap Leucate. On the wide cliff path, past the old lighthouse and the Redoute de la Haute Franqui, back
