The state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania already has a lot to offer and is always worth a trip. For the Bundesgartenschau 2009, the city has smartened up once again. The Saxon Duke Henry the Lion defeated the Slavs in 1160 and founded the city, which from 1358 became the seat of the Mecklenburg dukes and in the following centuries not only developed well as a residence city. Visitors are offered numerous sights, above all the castle with the castle museum. The Old Garden is one of the most beautiful and representative places in the city. Here is located among others the State Museum with one of the largest collections of Dutch painters in Europe.
