In 2004, several communities near Wildon joined forces to form the "Hengist Cultural Park". The central Styrian mountain range was first mentioned in the 9th cent.The Buchkogel, formerly known as the "Hoher Hengst", together with the Schlossberg, is one of the core areas of Styrian regional history. Excavations have uncovered traces that point to almost 6500 years of continuous settlement activity. This is unique in the south-eastern Alps - we explore this uniqueness thanks to this varied hiking tour.
From Wildon train station, we walk to the main road, cross it and keep right across the parking lot. At the next road, we walk left uphill towards Buchkogel, past the main school, and turn right onto the path "Im Rasental". We follow the road slightly uphill, hike briefly into a dip and climb up to a T-junction with two information boards on Wildoner Schlossberg. Here we turn left, then left again at the next crossroads and hike more steeply uphill to a fork at the edge of the forest, where a Hallstatt burial mound is located slightly above in the forest. We follow the cultural hiking trail to the left towards Buchkogel and come to a forest road that leads us steadily uphill through the beech forest. At a signposted crossroads with a display board on the geology of the Wildoner Berg, we turn right, the south-facing path leads us relatively unnoticed past the highest point of the Buchkogel, which is located to our right off the path in the forest.
