The impression may be deceiving, but in hardly any region do more hills seem to be crowned with historic buildings of various functions and origins than in the hilly land between Weimar, Jena, and Ilmenau. This is largely due to a real "construction boom" in the 19th and early 20th centuries, to which many observation towers are also owed: There are round and square, tall and low, simple and elaborate ones. Sabine Gilcher
