The Briksdal glacier is an arm of the 486 square kilometer Jostedal glacier, Europe’s largest. The glacier is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful valleys, surrounded by tall mountains and impressive waterfalls. At the foot of the glacier lies a small turquoise lake, which feeds the river rushing alongside the path to the glacier.

Even the bus journey up the valley is spectacular. From the fjord village of Olden, the road travels around 20 kilometers up towards the glacier, passing along the shore of Oldevatnet lake. Camping grounds and small farms line the lush Oldedalen valley floor.

Once you step off the bus at the mountain lodge the majesty of the location begins to sink in. The towering Volefossen waterfall with its 300 meter free fall would be the highlight on many other journeys.

While it is possible to buy passage on small vehicles named “Troll cars” it is recommend to walk so you can stop and take photos as you wish and enjoy the scenery. Walking the trail is arguably as beautiful as the glacier and lake itself.

A key highlight on the way to the glacier is crossing the bridge in front of Kleivafossen waterfall. When the waterfall swells from the glacial melt further upstream it offers a powerful experience as you feel the raw energy of the water pounding down on the rocks before you. Standing on the bridge with the glacial spray hitting your face will literally take your breath away.

    Tips and suggestions

    • There is a restaurant, café and souvenir shop at the base of the trail to the glacier.
    • Free toilets are available in the restaurant and the souvenir shop.
    • There are toilets at the upper parking lot for the Troll cars.
    • There is a pleasant picnic area about half-way along the path to the glacier.

    Roadbook

Just above the bus parking lot, past the Troll cars, is a sign marking the start of the walking trail up to the glacier. The 2.5 kilometer long, wide, dirt trail is relatively moderate with some steeper parts around Kleivafossen waterfall and towards the end closer to the glacier.

The first half of the path follows the river, before separating and coming together again shortly before the glacier lake. In certain sections the walking route is shared with the Troll cars.

Once you reach the upper parking lot for the Troll cars, it’s about 700 meters further to the lake below the glacier.

Along the way you will see signs indicating the edge of the glacier over the preceding centuries, highlighting the remarkable decline in its size. There are also some information boards providing more detail about glaciers and their geology.

    Return along the same path.
