The seven-hour march along the former inner-German border is a longer, historically significant route. The chapter of the German division can be explored on the way at the Zweiländermuseum Rodachtal. Via Lindenau, you finally reach Bad Colberg on forest and meadow paths. At the destination, you can look down from Veste Heldburg.
Veste Heldburg stands on a volcanic cone over 400 m high and was built in the High Middle Ages. Visitors to the “Franconian Lighthouse” can look far into the Heldburger Land and also visit the castle museum, which opened there in 2016.

Roadbook
You start in Sesslach and leave the town at the Rothenberger Gate, past the cemetery heading towards Hattersdorf. You cross the village along the main street. The route continues along the marking through a forested area to Oberelldorf. The village church there is interesting and worth a detour. The path leads to Muggenbach, past the natural monument in the forest “Hoher Stein” and on to Gemünda, a dreamy, very old village with lots of half-timbered houses.
In Gemünda, you initially head towards Ummerstadt, and after a small bridge, keep left towards Ummerstadter Kreuz, a memorial site for the residents on both sides of the border. The former border installation caused the second smallest town in Germany to fall into a decades-long sleep. This town is unrivalled in its originality and its original appearance. A detour is definitely worthwhile.
Via Lindenau, you continue on forest and meadow paths to Bad Colberg. This small spa town, whose water is drawn from a depth of 1400 m, promises relaxation and healing. After an ascent, you reach Veste Heldburg (“Franconian Lighthouse”), which towers over the landscape like a fairy-tale castle. In good weather, the impressive sister castle “Franconian Crown” in Coburg can be seen from the tower. In the romantic small town at its feet, there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments.
