Wine Without Borders

While the German Wine Gate marks the southern end of the German Wine Route, Wissembourg is the northern boundary of the Alsatian Wine Route. As we stroll through the vineyards, our gaze sweeps across both regions, and we realize that, for the benefit of all, hiking and the enjoyment of wine know no borders today.

We start at the Wissembourg train station and walk northwest, past the Hotel Restaurant Europe, up Rue de la Gare. We go around the roundabout on the right and stroll through the green space on the left bank of the Lauter. At the next intersection, we leave the riverside path to the right and pass through the breach in the city wall. We walk along the left side of the fortification wall to the Quai du 4 Novembre. Turning right takes us to the picturesque and well-preserved old town of Wissembourg, which owes its origins to an influential Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century. Despite an eventful history marked by wars and plundering—during which it belonged to Germany or France on several occasions—Wissembourg is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Alsace. We keep to the left, cross the Lauter Canal, and follow it out of town through the picturesque Faubourg de Bitche, which is lined with magnificent half-timbered and stone houses. Profile picture of Albrecht Ritter Author Albrecht Ritter
