Bodenstein Castle sits enthroned on the southern edge of the Ohmgebirge, a shell limestone mountain. The walk leads up there - and mainly through beech forest. The castle is considered to be the best-preserved castle in the northern Eichsfeld region.
From the parking lot, we follow the village road to the north and leave the village behind us. We soon leave the open valley and follow the wide main path straight ahead into the forest ("green X on a white background"). We walk past the poplar pond and choose the forest path on the right at the fork behind it, which then climbs slightly. We pass the "Gesundbrunnen" and turn right at the junction marked "Düstergrund". The trail ascends through the Düstergrund on a gentle to moderate gradient, although quite muddy in places. On the upper slope, a forest path joins from the left, which we ignore. At the upper edge of the slope, separated from the open land only by a strip of hedge, a cross-path awaits us. Turn left there. The path leads into a wide field path, onto which we turn right. It takes us in a right-hand bend to the village of Bodenstein. We walk straight on through the settlement (signpost "Burg Bodenstein") and come to the entrance to Bodenstein Castle. On the square in front

Sabine Gilcher
