    Author’s recommendation

Approaching by bike is recommended, as you can then ride up to the start of the hiking route over the Blender, all the way to Holdenried. Helmet requirement must be observed. It also shortens the tour time.

After the tour, it is worth stopping at the beer garden at Unterer Wirt in Heiligkreutz for a conclusion.

    Location

The Blender rises in the Kürnacher Forest, a landscape part of the Adelegg area, in the municipalities of Buchenberg and Wiggensbach. It lies 3.8 km north-northwest of the core settlement of the former and 1.8 km south-southwest of the latter. On the northern flank of the mountain are the hamlets Holdenried and Hino, northeast lie Wendelins and Unterried, and east Notzen with Ermengerst beyond, all belonging to Wiggensbach. On the south slope, some houses stand east of the summit in Eschachberg, at the southern foot lies Masers and at the southwest foot Wegscheidel, all belonging to Buchenberg. About 2.5 km southeast (in a straight line) lies Herrenwieser Weiher. Northwest-northwest of the summit, the Rohrach springs, southwest the Kürnach, and southeast flows past the Kollerbach.

The Blender is not the highest elevation in the immediate area; this is the Dürre Bichl (also called Dürrer Bühl; approx. 1077 m), which is about 900 m west-northwest, but the most striking. The highest elevation of the Kürnacher Forest is Ursersberg (approx. 1129 m), about 3.5 km (straight line) southwest of the Blender.

    Natural spatial classification

The Blender belongs within the Alpine Foreland to the major natural unit group Nagelfluh heights and basins between Lake Constance and Isar (No. 02) and in the major unit Adelegg (023) to the subunit High (Southern) Adelegg (023.0) and on its northern and northeastern flanks to the Northeastern Adelegg (023.1). Its landscape drops north, east, and south into the natural area of moraine hills of Buchenberg-Wiggensbach (035.02) belonging to the Iller forelands, which counts in the major natural unit group Subalpine young moraine land (03) and in the major unit Iller young moraine land (035) to the subunit Western Iller young moraine land (035.0).

    Transmission tower Blender

On the Rauhenstein, the southwestern spur of the Blender, stands at 1057 m height in the municipality of Wiggensbach the 115 m high transmission tower Blender. It was built by the German Federal Post in 1982/83 as a replacement for a lower steel lattice mast as a type tower (FMT 15) and put into operation in October 1984. Besides directional and mobile radio, the tower serves the broadcasting of the Kempten regional radio station RSA-Radio on the FM frequency 97.6 MHz.

    Traffic, hiking and sport

Passing the Blender, northeast between Wiggensbach and Ermengerst as well as east of Ermengerst towards Ahegg runs the district road OA 15. From this, at the isolated farm Herrenwies, the state road 2376 branches off south of the mountain towards the hamlet Wegscheidel.

Several hiking trails lead over the Blender, which can be managed both on foot and by bike; a climb is also possible for children. It takes about one and a half hours from the center of Wiggensbach to the summit. On the Wiggensbach side, a fitness trail has also been set up at the foot of the mountain. Additionally, the mountain hosts the most difficult ascent and summit point of the pre-Alpine marathon.

View over Herrenwieser Weiher and past the isolated farm Herrenwies northwestwards to the Blender

Transmission tower Blender viewed from the northeast

The Blender near Buchenberg and Wiggensbach in the Swabian district of Oberallgäu in Bavaria is a 1072.3 m above NHN[1] high mountain in the Kürnacher Forest.

    Viewpoint

In good visibility, the view from the Blender extends to the Alps including the Grünten in the Allgäu Alps, 20.5 km south-southeast, and to the Zugspitze in the Wetterstein Mountains about 67 km southeast. On the other side, the mountain with the tower provides a prominent landmark for the surrounding area. It is already visible from afar from all directions due to its transmission tower.

    Roadbook

From Heiligkreutz, the route goes along the small side road through Stölzlings and then immediately turns left towards Kollerbach. In the left curve, a narrow path leads downhill to the federal road KE 13, which we unfortunately have to follow until shortly before Hörtwies. Then on the left side, there is a bike path that accompanies us into Wiggensbach. From the intersection in Wiggensbach, the Blender path leads steeply left on the opposite side up to Hino and then to Holdenried. In the shade of the trees by the small stream, there is a parking spot for the bike. I went the route clockwise, but of course, it is possible the other way around. Follow the signpost to the right into the forest area and then continue following the forest path, which leads us in steps up to the next junction at the pasture. The last ten minutes are a bit steeper and full of roots up to the cross path. To the right, you reach the transmission tower and the viewpoint, which is really worth it when the visibility is good. Then go back a few meters and turn left, then you come to the large cross with the two benches. Unfortunately, there is no view here. Extending the path, a trail then leads downhill again in steps and with roots down to Blenden. After a few meters, the gravel path continues downhill to the left through the fields back to Holdenried. The return trip by bike corresponds to the outbound route, back to the starting point in Heiligkreutz.

    Equipment

You should already have rain gear, sunglasses, sunscreen, a change of clothes, a camera, money, and good mood with you. Hiking boots are not required, but shoes that allow you to walk a longer distance and handle a short section in the forest should certainly be worn.
