Hearty Alpine fare in the far northeast of the Lechtal Alps

Before the alpine traveler disappears into the Lermoos Tunnel on the Fernpass route, he notices on the right a stately mountain massif culminating in the expansive Gartnerwand. North of the several kilometers wide, banded rock face wall lies the Bleispitze (actually: Pleisspitze) with the notably steep grassy ledges that drop directly into the Zwischentore. We set off from the hidden hamlet of Bichlbächle to realize these objectives: The Bleispitze via relatively obstacle-free paths, while the rugged Gartnerwand is much more demanding and therefore intended only as an option for the truly experienced. The brittle north ridge is climbed almost like a via ferrata and even the later transition to the west summit requires some scrambling in several sections. This is no longer terrain for pure hikers and one of the most challenging tours in this guide! However, it also offers a high experiential value…

In Bichlbächle, 1278 m, we turn onto a meadow path into the large trench, cross the stream to the right and ascend the forest slopes to the Bichlbächler Alm, 1606 m. The trail continues past various huts in a grass terrain, makes a left curve upwards and then traverses diagonally to the Sommerbergjöchle, 2001 m, where the two summit routes fork. First to the Bleispitze: one ascends on the south slope, mostly along the ridge, but sometimes clearly detouring right. A ledge is crossed with a slight descent in between. Then follows a slightly steeper section before the ridge backbone to the summit of the Bleispitze, 2225 m, considerably flattens.Back at the Sommerbergjöchle one goes directly onto the north ridge of the Gartnerwand over the rugged forepeak. After the first rock sections, a climb requires concentration and firm grip – the passage is almost constructed as a via ferrata with many wire ropes. Above, traverses follow on the right side (caution due to brittleness); but one also

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
